Berengaria of Navarre, often forgotten queen of England, forged partnerships and connections across Western Europe during her marriage and beyond. This talk explores connections, friendships, and alliances in medieval Europe.
Wife of Richard I, Berengaria of Navarre’s tenure as queen has been paid little attention, not least because she never visited England whilst married to Richard.
Politically isolated and personally neglected during her marriage, the marital alliance between England and Navarre proved highly useful to Richard during the Third Crusade.
Beyond her marriage however, Berengaria’s political skills, negotiations with the papacy and the kings of France, as well as her close friendship with her sister, Blanche, countess of Champagne, enabled her to draw together a series of networks and connections that benefited not only her but also placed her at the centre of a network across Western Europe.
This is the story of a woman who defied the odds and emerged as a powerful figure on the political scene of medieval France.
