The eldest son of a Gosport draper and his Birmingham-born wife, Arthur Upfield left Gosport in 1910 to live in Australia. He became well-known for the detective novels he wrote featuring a biracial Aboriginal detective, Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte.
Born in Gosport in 1890, Arthur Upfield left his hometown at the age of twenty to settle in Australia. He travelled widely throughout the outback working at a variety of jobs and at the same time learning about Aboriginal cultures. He was later to use this knowledge in the detective novels he wrote which featured a biracial Aboriginal detective, Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte.
This talk will discuss his novels, but will also explore his early life in Gosport, tracing schools he attended, places he lived and worked, and his family’s role in the First World War. The talk will also look at relationships within his broader family, sometimes surprising, sometimes tragic.

The Snape Room is on the first floor but accessible via lift. All other aspects of the venue are level. Blue Badge parking on-road on either side of venue. Other parking, including accessible, available close by in South Street car park, or adjacent at Morrisons Supermarket for customers.
